Xuras Scrapheap
« on: 16 November, 2011, 16:30:37 pm »
I can start on this now I don't have XurasRP to worry about getting completed first. This has been an idea of mine for a good while now, and should be simple enough to create once the map's completed, which shouldn't really take that long compared to a huge RP map.

If any of you have seen Scrapheap Challenge then it's basically like that. You get assigned teams, and you have to build a vehicle out of scrap lying around to perform a specific task, the team that does the task the best wins. It's as simple as that really, for the script you'll be put into teams (not totally decided yet) and be placed around the map, you get given a vehicle with a trailer on to find things. I'll probably implement power, so you have to find a socket to be able to weld stuff, and you get upgrades for winning tasks.

And here's the starting of the map:

I had a feeling it'd be blocked. I'll probably work on XurasRP after this, though I might do a few more small gamemodes like this one first.

Did a bit more work on it today, trying to make nice natural curved roads in hammer is really hard. Also, added proper transparency for trees, so the shadows aren't completely black on the floor.

And an overview of what I have so far, don't mind that some of the trees look like they have no leaves, they only have none on top. Also the little roads at the side of the map are just road templates that I created:

This is a brilliant idea, but you probably would have to limit all tools down to basic usage, weld, and some sort of axis which only works if both "ends" are in the middle. And yeah, lots LOTS of scrap in different sizes, maybe even add some additional to the default halflife props, etc.

The limited tools is the idea, like you'll have to find power to be able to weld stuff, otherwise you can just do basic stuff such as adding an axis to things. I was also thinking of somehow implementing a way of making props aerodynamic, so if you made a box it would go slower than if you had something rounded, and if you added a prop to the back of your vehicle and made it rotate you could use it to turn you depending on how fast you went.

There's going to be engines of different types lying around, some will start up instantly, some will take a bit of trying to get them going and others will just not work at all. So you'll have to make sure the engine works first, before getting everything built then realising.

I'm going for a dynamic system. You'll probably be able to create your own teams, plus accept/decline new members, and at the end of each round you'll be given an option of how long you want the next round to go on for.

With the engines that kinda work but need a bit to get em going will you have like a puzzle or something to do to fix it.
I'd think that'll be pretty cool but i guess source isn't that advanced yet.
lol

I'm doing it in Lua, it's possible. The puzzle could be something like that water pipe game or something where you have to connect the pipes for the water to go through, maybe something a little easier to code but I dunno.

Its a great idea in theory but I think it'll just be unpractical and really "old" having a waterpipe game to start an engine. (old as in, it've been done 9001 times before)
Maybe some other things, like you have to wack it with a wrench 20 or so times, maybe use a blowtorch abit on it, etc. realistic things.
